[Amsterdam, The Netherlands. January 7th, 2010] -- Let's start off the year Properly. Deejay San Proper, or should we say "international superstar San Proper" began as a guitar player.
Amognst many things, in '95 he (most proudly) founded "The Mindmenders," a Funk/Hip hop band, which eventually won 'De Grote prijs van Nederland' in '99; an annual
award-show for upcoming artists. Having since left his rock accolades for electronica's vibrant underworld, you'll find him now collaborating with Amsterdam's finest dance producers (i.e. Melon, Tom Trago, O-Boogie, Cinnaman,
and Steven de Peven, et al) with upcoming releases on the likes of labels
Rushhour and Dekmantel. He's also got an extensive
booking bill through this year, including a stop off at the prestigious Detroit Movement Festival and at Fabric (London). RA even shot him out a comprehensive and
celebratory Breaking Through
entry, touching on his meanderings and accomplishments of the past 15 years. Truly part of the Dutch school of dance music -- laid back, humorous, groovy, colorful, and warm
hearted -- this powerhouse of a talent is going to blow the doors off of 2010. Catch up while you can on his discogs, and fill your rekkid boxes with the smack-daddy colorings
of the mighty San.
Who is San Proper?
You mean Dr. San Proper? He's a dj & producer from Amsterdam, the Netherlands, known for his
proper dj-sets and his style of production. He dropped his "Proper's A'dam Family Series" at Rush Hour in 2007, he did a release on
Perlon last fall 2009 and he'll release his 'Sex Drive Rhythm EP' on Dekmantel records February 2010.
You're a prominent and versatile music figure to the locals in Amsterdam. You have a lot of
friends/contacts, and a lot of people in your neck of the woods who have great respect for you. In your own right, do you have
anyone you'd like to recognize or show some love for?
Apart from all the labels who put up with me, my work and my remixes I'd also like to show love to
my inspiring colleagues Steven de Peven (Rednose Distrikt), Tom Trago, Melon, Cinnaman (Beat Dimensions) and Aardvarck for what they
do and contribute out here... While I'm at it, I'd ilke to give props to Anthony 'Shake' Shakir, Rick Wade & Mike Huckaby, Rahaan,
Les Rita Mitsouko, PJ Harvey & Harvey, Disco3000, Magnetron & LeLe, Dekmantel, Ike, Tape, Theo Parrish & Kenny Dixon Jr. For this
year, 2010, check out "The Dirt Machine"... it's gonna rock the room.
What are some of the things that you hope to accomplish in 2010?
I wouldn't wanna ruin the surprise for you and me, but I'll bet it involves
great music, people, spots and shows...
What are you most proud of looking back on 2009?
I'm proud of my tracks 'Keep it Raw' & 'December 10th' on Perlon, and the feedback I got
on this release...
Ideally, who would like to work with in the coming months whether it be in the studio or for
parties/festivals?
I'd like to work with some of my friends in Chicago, I'd like to work with some of my
friends in Detroit and I'd like to work with some of friends in Berlin.... and perhaps do a 'Proper Mekka Family
Series!'
As far as production, how to you prepare yourself before you step into the studio? What is the general
process of how you put yourself together to make music? Does that differ from how you prepare yourself for a deejay set?
Contents of my formula are top secret, but I can tell you - I quickly get into mode when I set
myself to playing records, performing live or producin' in my studio. Although all three are different and similar at times, it's
all part of my culture, right? I got a clear focus for my favorite things.
How did Ricardo Villalobos to get a hold of you for the remix for his first Vasco EP? How exactly
did that commission come together?
Berlin fell for my charm...

What were you favorite releases of 2009? Have you or could you generate a top 10 list?
